Chuka Umunna: No stranger to the UK Parliament, Umunna has served as a Member of Parliament for Streatham under the Labour Party since 2010. A successful lawyer, the 36-year old also founded and edited the online political magazine, The Multicultural Politics and has been referred to as ‘the British Barack Obama‘ in the media.
Kate Osamor: Osamor who is a GP Practice Manager, contested for the Edmonton seat under the Labour Party. Kate is the daughter of popular local UK politician, Martha Osamor, who was a former Haringey councillor and community leader on the Broadwater Farm estate in Tottenham. She was also vice-chair of the party’s Black section.
Helen Grant: Born to a Nigerian father and English mother, Grant is the current Member of Parliament for Maidstone and The Weald in Kent and the current Minister for Sport, Tourism & Equalities. Although a former member of the Labor Party, the 53-year old joined the Conservatives in 2006 and became the first black woman to be selected to defend a Tory seat and her election made her the Conservatives’ first female black MP.
Chi Onwurah: Onwurah is also a current Member of Parliament for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and is the first black person to occupy this position for Newcastle. Onwurah is of mixed parentage with a Nigerian father and English mother. A graduate of Electrical Engineering, the 50-year old served as Head of Telecoms Technology at OFCOM, with a focus on broadband provision before she became a Member of Parliament.
